New Year, New You: Social Selling Edition

As another year comes to a close, we become inundated with tips and information on how to best prepare ourselves to have a really great new year. While you may be focused on a fresh workout regimen or learning to get a better handle on your work-life balance, it is important to also update your online presence for the new year. Let 2016 be the year of social selling! Get your LinkedIn profile in tip-top shape with a few quick and easy steps.

1. Choose the right profile picture
They say a picture is worth a thousand words. It’s no different with your profile picture. There are bad, satisfactory, and great pictures you can use for your LinkedIn profile picture. Often times users choose a so-so picture of themselves at a social event and crop the person standing next to them. This is passable, but not the best option.

Your profile picture should be a headshot or a candid shot of you and only you. It could be your picture for your company website, or you in action giving a presentation. Make sure a user can clearly see it is you, and you are wearing something that resembles what you wear in your work place. If you don’t dress in suit and tie everyday, don’t feel obligated to pose that way in your picture. The more natural, the better!

2. Update your Headline / Experience section on LinkedIn
It is really easy to forget to update your LinkedIn over time. Your headline (right under your name) should include your current job title and the name of your company. This is an easy way to help your profile be easily found within search results.

Make sure your experience section is updated to your most current role. Don’t forget to add a description to let users know your responsibilities and values are for that job. If you’ve been putting it off for a while, there is no better time than right before a new year.

3. Give yourself a customized URL
Having a customized URL on LinkedIn showcases that you are a serious social user who knows the in’s and out’s of LinkedIn. The best part is that making a customized URL is extremely easy and you’d be surprised at how very few know about it!

On your profile, underneath your profile picture, you will see your URL. Next to the URL is a tool icon. Click on that tool icon, and on the right corner of the page you can create your custom URL. The best one to make is simply your first and last name. If that is taken, try adding a middle initial.

4. Edit your contact info
You want users to be able to reach out to you easily. The first place they are going to check is your contact info underneath your picture, name, and headline. Make sure the email on your contact info is one you frequently check. Add three websites that users can look at to learn more about yourself and your company.
