Listen, Learn, and Lead: PeopleLinx Best Practices for LinkedIn Groups

As a social business specialist at PeopleLinx, I’m asked by my clients every day: “What other tips do you have to help me reach my goals faster?” LinkedIn Groups is my go-to answer. If you’re not leveraging Groups, you should be! One of our legal clients, with a global presence and over 900 attorneys, just generated more RSVPs to one of their live events through a LinkedIn Groups invitation than they were able to generate through any other channel.

With nearly 2 million groups on LinkedIn, there are bound to be a number of groups that fit your professional and personal interests. Luckily for you, LinkedIn allows you to join up to 50 groups, as well as additional subgroups. There are nearly as many benefits to joining groups, as groups themselves! We can’t give away all of our tricks, but here are a few of the major benefits to joining groups:

The Benefits of Joining Groups

  • Expand Your Network: Industry specific groups and Alumni groups can have up to 20,000+ members, allowing you to vastly extend your network and reach within a community that shares your interests and background.
  • Learn from the Experts: Within a group, you have the ability to listen to other group members’ unique industry insights and learn from their knowledge.
  • Showcase Your Own Expertise: You can become a thought leader of your own by introducing discussion topics, creating polls, and sharing interesting and relevant content that speaks directly to that group.
  • Drive Business Opportunities: Check out your fellow group members! This is an additional way to forge valuable connections that could generate potential business partnerships and opportunities for you and your company.
  • Send Messages to Group Members: LinkedIn even allows you to send group members direct InMail messages since you are a part of the same community, even if you aren’t first-degree connections.

PeopleLinx tip: Be mindful about reaching out to people and for what purpose, you don’t want to make the wrong impression on your fellow group members. Approach people with valuable conversations or opportunities, not with spam-like sales offers.

Choosing the Right Groups

Now that you understand why you should be joining and engaging in groups, let’s talk about how to choose the right groups for you. There are different ways to find groups:

  1. Check out the groups your connections have joined. When you’re surfing your connections’ profiles, take note of their group memberships since you may have similar interests and want to join the same group.
  2. Search for groups by typing keywords into the main search bar. LinkedIn will then generate the most popular groups that match that keyword.
  3. LinkedIn offers a “Groups You May Like” tool, similar to the “People You May Know” feature. These suggested groups are generated by LinkedIn scanning your profile for keywords and establishing groups that you’re network is a part of.

Now you know why and how to join groups, let’s get started!
